About The Sri Kurmam Temple: 

         Sri Kurmam temple is a Swayambu Mahavishnu temple. In the sector extensive, wherein Lord  Vishnu is worshiped inside the form of “Kurma avatar” (Tortoise the second incarnation of the well-known Dasavataras). This ancient shrine is believed to be prior to the golden location of Sri Rama, prominent references approximately this shrine are to be had in Kurma, Vishnu, Agni, Padma, Brahmaanda pronouns. While the shrine is said to be a range of million years antique  outer structures were reconstructed many times. The gopuram (Sikharam) is set 2000 years vintage. 

During krutayuga, devas and asuras churned the ksheera Sagara for nectar(Amrutam) using serpent Vasuki as thread and Mandara parvata as Churing stick. The Churing stick of Mandara parvata slipped  and submerged into the ocean.  Devas and asuras attempted however failed to put it in its right region for smooth churning. Mahavishnu to meet the choice  of Devas appeared as kurma and lifted the churing stick of Mandara Parvata on his lower back and enabled them to churn Ksheera Sagara and nectar.
